In a last-ditch attempt to save their relationship, a young couple partake in a new experimental virtual reality as a form of couple’s therapy.

SYNOPSIS

Amy and Gregg were once a passionate and loving couple, but the love has faded, their relationship is coming to an end. In a desperate attempt to save their relationship, they agree to a new and experimental version of couple’s therapy. ‘Desync’ utilises VR Technology to explore an entire relationship in one evening as a subjective cinematic experience. From their first date to the first ‘I love you’, they see themselves as we do, as the VR tries to show them how they are meant to be together through beautiful, intimate and important moments to fantastic music. But when the experience starts to glitch, the sequence breaks and they are forced to be shown how they got so bad in the first place.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

Our short film, DESYNC was, for me, a chance to explore the place of technology in a modern relationship and the concept of a happy ending. The story came from looking at conventions often found in romantic films, particularly the happy ending and the ignorance of reality.

The purpose of the DESYNC technology is to create a film, a sizzle reel of a beautiful relationship as Hollywood does and then we wanted to break it – not just to show that some couples shouldn’t stay together, but the over reliance of technology in today’s society.

To portray the beautiful virtual reality, our cinematography, colouring, score and VFX work inspired by online video styles such as vapourwave, an internet trend that combines the nostalgia of the 80’s with contemporary media. This fit the idea of the remembering of an entire relationship with such warm artificial nostalgia.

Whilst the story naturally developed and changed during production – I feel the core message of our film remains – sometimes it’s better for people not to be together and technology isn’t the answer to all human issues.

With the help of my fantastic cast and crew, I believe our film serves that core message.
